Hola Hermanos y Hermanas!

I’m back in Spanish work! I got transferred to the Mesa Grande Ward in Mesa and it covers the same area i served in when i first came out on my mission im just speaking Spanish now hahaha so that’s awesome! My new companion is Elder Swanson he is from Memphis Tennessee and has been out about 18 months. So far we are getting along well and minus me not speaking any Spanish haha it is going really well!
I left good old Desert Hills Ward on a good note and i get to go back on Saturday for Ashlie Van Winkle’s baptism and the baptisms of her 2 children. I am soooooooo excited for them i cant even stand it!!! They are the first individuals that i have been able to find, teach the first lesson, and then see them get baptized and it makes me so overwhelmingly happy to see this family entering the gate that leads to eternal life! If i went home right after the baptism (which I wont) i would be fine with it because i was able to get this stalwart family to the waters of baptism and see them partake of the fruit of the tree of life and to share in this glorious gospel.
This work is lead and guided by the Lord and I know that with his help i can see the same miracles and blessings i saw in English work in my new calling in Spanish work. This is a permanent switch from what i am told and so i have to put all my faith in the Lord that he will bless me with his spirit and that i may learn they language as fast as possible!
I love you all! Thank you for all your love and support!!!!
Love,
Elder Call (llamada)

3 BAPTISMS THIS WEEK!!!!!!!
What an amazing week i have had! I am now really LEARNING learning Spanish and it is crazy!!!! I can understand most of it but talking is waaaay harder for me but ill get it! On Saturday 2 of the most amazing things happened so far in my mission.

One, Elder Russel M Nelson of the Quorum of the 12 apostles came to speak to all of us missionaries in the Scottsdale and Mesa Missions. His words were amazingly inspiring! He was quite possibly the funniest person i have heard give a talk it was amazing! We all got to shake his hand and my goodness if you could have been there…. The spirit was so strong that i swear if any nonmember were to walk into that room they would have known this church was true without a doubt…. just wow!
He was accompanied by 2 speakers from the seventy. Todd B. Hanson and Brad D. Foster. And they were just as powerful in their remarks as well. Elder Hanson spoke on section 31 of the Doctrine and Covenants. It was very touching and brought tears to my eyes. I had never read that section and those of you in my family if you read it (especially mom and dad) you will know why it touched me so. Elder Foster spoke on what we do as missionaries and what we should be striving to do. We fear no man for we are disciples of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! We are here to tell the world that His church, not Joseph Smith’s church, but Christ’s church is on the Earth once more! What a powerful message is it not? I encourage all those members that read this to remember what it is that we have to tell the world and how important it is that we share it with those around us. Those who are not members and there are but few who read this but this church is true and it is the Lord’s church and he leads and guides it. Think on that and the spirit will testify of my writings i promise you that in the name of Jesus Christ.
Elder Nelson gave us the opportunity to ask questions we had for ourselves and he would do his best to answer them. He was not stumped that is for sure he was amazing. just so full of joy and knowledge and enlightenment. He strained the importance of looking at our investigators and everyone with the end in mind. Many missionaries and i know that i have fallen in to this trap many times before think that baptism is the end of the road for them and they are done. that is not the case at all. We NEED to help these people get to the Temple. Plain and simple. And that is what i intend to do with this amazing family that was baptized! though i am no longer in the area i will always write and encourage them to move towards that ultimate goal! It was an amazing experience not to be forgotten.
Lastly that day Ashlie Van Winkle and her 2 children Brendan and Briana Mitchel were baptized. It was an awesome service. The sweet spirit that was there was so soothing and touching. I was fortunate enough to speak on Baptism and be a witness to the baptism. Brother Jason Wells preformed the ordinance. I was great! I was so moved to see this entire family making this amazing step towards their Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I feel so honored and privileged to have been able to teach them all the lessons and to see them reach baptism. Its been an amazing week and I am ever so grateful for the spirit and for the gospel. I love you all and remember the Lord always and strive to always have His spirit to be with you.
Love,
Elder Call

Transferred !!!!! June 25, 2014

I got transferred! I am no longer in downtown I am in beautiful North Scottsdale! It is the same as home hahaha nice car dealerships and big ol’ houses hahaha I love it! don’t have to worry about bed bugs in every house you go to visit here! let’s see what i did this week.

Monday: Alright we had the normal day except for this one interesting meeting…. while at walmart trying to just go shopping and mind our own business this guy drives up next to use while we are walking and starts yelling at us about white Jesus. He was African American and for some reason thought that we condemned all those of color to hell and olny the white would be saved because he said that the church only sends out little white boys and they dont send girls or boys of color and that the 10,000 dollars or so we pay to be out here goes directly to the churches pocket and we pay for some guys mansion in salt lake or something it was just a strong testament to me that there must be opposition in all things even the irrelevant things like the race of Christ. whether he was white black or orange he still did what he did for me and for all the world and that was all that mattered so we just moved on.

Tuesday: Elder Livermore Soto and I went to an old folks home and worked in their garden for like 90 minutes it was great got to learn how to use a weed whacker and had a good time and felt good know we helped those folks out that morning. A woman there named Ms Clara told me the 5 things i needed to be a good man haha 1. Dont hit women, 2. have a job, 3. be faithful, 4. dont drink smoke or do drugs, and 5. fear god. i think i got that list down hahaha.

Wednesday: we had district meeting and so with what happened with the gentelman on monday we decided to do a training on using the Book of Mormon to answer the obscure concerns some people have it was nice we also learned how to do a 1 minute street contact about the restoration and we have been using that alot and its been going really well. We saw James too (I was given permission to use first names) and we were going to see Rolando but when we came to his door James was already there and wanted to have the lesson there. it was awesome we talked about the Law of Chastity and of course that is not the favorite topic for anyone to talk about but James was totally cool with it and said that he and Rolando had just talked about the same topic that morning so it was perfect. we felt inspired to invite him to be baptized and he accepted and we set a date for the 26th of July its going to be awesome i hope i can go!

Thursday: we took Rolando to the Family History Center to help him find some of his ancestors so he could take them to the temple and be baptized for them. We ended up finding his dad his mom his grandpa his late wife and his daughter who passed away as well he really loved it! We also taught Anthony the 15 steps lesson on quitting smoking and it went really well and he really wants to quit and i think that he will i have faith in him. Then we went on splits with the ZL’s and that was…. interesting. Elder Burnside and I went to see Yuma a young man from Japan who doesnt speak much english but he was here for vocational school and he learned how to play guitar it was really cool to talk with him about stuff not really interested in the church but likes us so that works hahaha. Then Elder Burnside and I got to have a really good talk about our callings as missionaries and how they dont define if we are or were successful and i really learned alot that night he is an awesome Elder. And Ming got permission from here Jehovah’s Witness mom to get baptized!!!!! and she passed her interview! it was awesome!

Friday: amazing day! totally full of miracles! Normal Friday with weekly planning and all that but after we had dinner it went nuts! We got a phone call from the Sisters saying that a woman they had been teaching had moved into our area her name is Tanya and she is awesome! she is so prepared and wants to be a better person for sure she has a date set for the 5th of July!!! Then we saw a lady named Alice and she has been taught by the missionaries alot like 5 times alll the way through so we knew she would be solid. she said she quit smoking but drinks a little so we are working on that but that night we taught the Restoration and just laid it out and invited her to be baptized and set a date for the 26th of July! This week was awesome!

Saturday: A girl named Alyssia get baptized her sister had been baptized in out ward a few months back and now she wanted to be as well but they had been and still are going to the singles ward and i had only met her once but she asked me to be a witness at her baptism! it was great! We also got transfer news…. Elder Livermore stayed and is going to be with Elder Myers who was in my first zone with me and he is awesome! Elder Soto was going to the Phoenix Zone to be in the Catalina Branch with Elder Pischke and he had just finished training so that will be fun. I like I said earlier am now in North Scottsdale and it is sweet! Im with Elder Johnson and he is almost done with his mission too and he is hilarious! we live with Elder Lindamen and Elder Lakatani they are awesome too alot of love already and they have an open door policy… hahah that means you cant be alone behind a close door any closed door including the bathroom hahaha so it will take some time getting use to but they do it for a reason so all aboard!

Sunday: Rolando had a heart attack in church and so we rushed him to the hospital and we were with him most of the day. He is ok now and doing well.

Monday: Alot of good byes for me saying Adios to the spanish members and it was nice to have a good send off.

Tuesday: Transfer Meeting, everyone went their seperate ways and i went off to my new area. got to meet some of the members and find out about the area it is a really nice place and the ward is awesome!

Thats been my week so far! Pdays will be back on mondays after this so dont worry hahaha! I hope everyone is well! let me know how you all are!

PS I am kinda in need of more socks and short sleeve white shirts that are 16 neck size….. if any of you could help me with that i would soooooooooo greatful! I love you all!

Love,
Elder Call

BAPTISIMS!!!!!!! – letter 6/16/14

Ok so this week was how can i put it…….. AWESOME!!!!! It went so well that I couldn’t even stand it hahaha

Monday, after I finished here we went shopping and I found the sickest tie! I need to stop buying ties because I will run out of money eventually if I’m not careful hahaha! I found a battery charger for my camera but I forgot my camera at home…… sooooooo, still no pictures but I’d love to get some from all of you whenever you may be so that I can print them out and have them! We didn’t do a whole lot on Monday. It was just a run of the mill sort of day.

Tuesday, we saw our investigators and made sure they were ready for all the steps that all the individuals were taking, nothing monumental just being awesome and having a good day.

Wednesday, Oh My Goodness…… Ok so I really wish I had my camera because I have such good pictures….. ugghhh! But Elder Livermore and I were put in charge of cleanliness training at Zone Training Meeting. We had bowls of various sauces with different colors…. I asked who here didn’t make their bed this morning?? Then I took a handful of spaghetti sauce and slapped it on Elder Livermore’s chest to start then I kept asking who didn’t do this or didn’t do that and for those who didn’t do them they were allowed to come up and to slap something else on him. We had mustard and chili sauce and jelly it was great! We said this is what we would look if we wore our house’s filthiness on out clothing and we all decided it was time to shape up and clean more. haha. It was awesome for sure! Then we ate dinner with Brother and Sister Cross….they live in the heart of down town in a half hotel, half apartment building and they are on the 19th floor….. The view was outstanding and it just blew me away, it was awesome for sure!

Thursday, we went to the Mesa Temple. Man was it amazing. It was Elder Livermore’s last temple trip on his mission because he only has one transfer left before he goes home….. He was very emotional as was I that day. President Sweeney came up to me after and said, “I am so happy you are here, and so proud of you. You have a bright future ahead of you.” and then he said, “I think you are ready.” I’m not sure what he meant by that but I’m sure I’ll find out soon. We also got a new companion so we are back in a trio because last week Elder Ortiz left and now we have Elder Soto. He was born in Mexico then lived in Cali and came out from Utah so he is cool. We are getting along quite nicely I’d say.

Friday, we had an amazing day. We were able to go to a LA’s house and teach his friend W. It was interesting and almost got bible bashy but it ended up being very good us and him to hear each other and to talk of Christ and all. it was a good morning. Then we had a lesson with our golden egg S. We had a brother come with us because he was in law school and so was S. What we found out was that they had met at school the day before and were studying together it was crazy!!! We had no idea they were even in the same school and they were chatting up like they were best friends! It was crazy cool! And even S said that it was a sign that he was being pushed in this direction. God was telling him something and we were so happy to hear him say that. We are really excited for him! We also had a father’s day party for the Spanish branch. We did two skits and it was funny we were a big hit. It was fun.

Saturday, we had 2 baptisms on Saturday…. Kaiden and Landin Silversmith were baptized but Walt Lacy and it was awesome! I wish I could upload the pictures but I’m a idiot so maybe next week. But the service was just awesome! Couldn’t have been a stronger spirit in that room and there were a lot of nonmembers there as well so it was excellent.

Sunday, we confirmed those two boys in church that day and Landin asked if I would do it for him and was so honored that he would ask me….. I was so nervous though hahaha weird right?? I can get up and recite monologues in front of tons of people but my legs were shaking during that blessing…. it was great and it went well and everyone was happy and yea it was just so coooooool!!!! Ugggghhh I’ve missed this haha ! We also went to this lady Renee’s house….. She is a hoarder and we tried to help her with a few things , so that was interesting but that’s really all I did this week!

I hope all of you had a great week and that you are all doing well! For those of you who don’t have it yet and were asking for it here is the mission home address
Love,
Elder Call

PS: Hey just a note from the ‘mom’ : If you get a chance to write Elder Call let him know how great picture would be ….maybe just maybe he’ll stop and drop the little ting in his bag for the day ….never know it might just work !!!! Thanks for making my boy smile !  Keep it up friends !

Flavor Of The Week – letter 6/9/2014

Flavor Of The Week

Ok so this week lets see what has been going down in 602!

Monday, it was the usual P-Day stuff went to Ross got a few pretty dang awesome ties. I look beautiful in them hahaha. Then we went to this amazing place called last chance……it is a consignment store from Nordstrom’s Rack and everything is crazy cheap. I found awesome shoes for 30 bucks and I am obsessed with them. When I get a charger for my camera (if I can find one) I will take a picture and show you. Mom if you can find one I could use it haha I can’t find one out here yet. That night we went with a family to the Visitor Center to watch JSPR (Joseph Smith Prophet of the Restoration)! Ahhhh I love that movie! It was a really good experience for them 2 of the boys in the family are going to be baptized on Saturday!

Tuesday, we had Zone Conference and it was amazing. We got to choose what we wanted to talk about as a zone. We started saying things we find challenging about the mission and then we took markers and got 3 votes on what we wanted to talk about and we took the top 3 and talked about those. The zone decided on Pride, Putting the World Behind Us, and what we called the EAC (East Australian Current). The EAC is basically talking about just going with the flow and how a lot of Elders and Sisters are there just going with the motions but President told us we want to be out and above the flow and doing the things we are suppose to do and not just what our companion wants or the people around us want. Then we talked about giving up the things back home and all the things we have to put behind us while we are on our missions. It was great because it showed all of us how to really engage in our missions fully and gave us tips to getting past it all and losing ourselves in the work. Then pride….. the big one. We all had issues mainly with thinking we are better then some for example some elders my companion and I live with don’t think that the people we see on the street are worth their time because they know better then to waste their time there and they will never want to listen because they are so messed up so we are going to look for the “nice” or “good” people. It was rough to listen to some of it because I don’t ever see people on the street in that way. Our efforts are never going to waste and it kills me to think that some Elders think that way. But it was a great meeting and i learned a lot about myself and others

Wednesday, We had lunch with a recent convert R. He is from Cuba and went to cooking school so the food was awesome and we were able to invite an investigator of ours J to eat with us. It was great and we got to leave them a message that really hit home from both of them. Every Wednesday night we play volleyball at a local public park and its awesome we get to meet a lot of nonmembers who just want to have fun then we get their contact info and teach them and this week was no exception and we had a blast and met a wonderful man there that we are hoping turns into an investigator!

Thursday, we had 3 set appointments with members set to go with us to each. One was with a woman named N she is the girlfriend of a less active gentleman in out ward but we taught her the plan of salvation and committed her to be baptized on the 26th of July! Its a ways off but we know that she can get there and it could possibly happen even earlier. Then we can the T family and that lesson was great its a part member family and the two boys are getting baptized this week so woooooo! We taught them the Word of Wisdom and the Law of Chastity and Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy and it was fun and we only have one lesson to go over and its the 10 commandments. Their interview is on Wednesday. We were also suppose to see M who is a 15 year old girl that has/had a baptism date set for the 14th of this month but she needs permission from her mom and she is a Jehovah’s Witness soooooo that’s rough but she didn’t show up she was at the Phoenix Comic Con apparently haha.

Friday, Weekly Planning Day! Fun stuff! We were suppose to have a lesson with a man named S that day but he had to cancel on us but we are seeing him tonight so that’s all good! We got a potential that night as well we had a impromptu lesson with a man name M and his friend V just happen to be there so we talked about churches and the Book of Mormon and our church and what not (all in spanish btw) and it went well and he told us to come by and see him again so good things are happening.

Saturday, we had an Elder’s quorum activity. It was a lunch and we were able to invite J to come with us and he liked it and had a good time in the pool and the food was awesome! But we really struggled that night to find people to teach but everyday cant be a good day.

Sunday, Happy Sabbath! It was a great meeting even though none of our investigators showed up. We also found out that day that J’s eldest son died so we are kinda wondering what to do with that and it is really weighing heavy on us. We got to see a woman named Yolanda though and it was a good lesson because her family was going through a rough patch and we got to talk and relate a lot she is an awesome lady.

Well that was my week hahaa the Lord is teaching me so much I cant even stand it haha. I am  just growing like crazy out here and I’m able to just let go and have fun and work hard! Thank you all for writing me it really helps me get through my days out here knowing I have so much support!

Week 2 — still Spanish — who knew ! sent 6/2/2014

WORK WORK WORK !!!
Alright! So! This week was pretty crazy. Monday did the usual went shopping hung out took a companionship siesta the standard stuff.
Then we taught the Tsoisie family that night about temples and there importance. the mom is a member but her young boys are not so we are working with them they are 11 and 9 and there is one that is 7 as well. but we made a lot of questions and put them on sticky notes and covered the picture of the mesa temple and if they got the question right they got to take a sticky note off it was a lot of fun for the kids and us haha.
Tuesday we taught J again, we read the intro to the book of Mormon and we got to the last two paragraphs where it talks about Moroni’s promise about asking heavenly father with a sincere heart and a willingness to act he will manifest the truth and divinity of the book of Mormon to you and he was just like i already know its true. not a doubt in his mind that its the true church and that he wants to get baptized but he has to get past his Word of Wisdom issues to get there but we are going to set 28th of June as his baptismal date!! That was the Tuesday highlight.

Wednesday, we had 8 lessons. We worked out tails off for sure! We got a new investigator as well his name is A and he is about 15 years old his grandpa was baptized about a year ago so now he is interested. We shared with him the book of Mormon and talked about it for a little and he said he would read so we plan on contacting him again this week. We taught 4 less actives and recent converts as well and committed them all to go to church 2 of the 4 showed so hey not bad! We saw R who is a hilarious Cuban man show speaks English and was baptized 2 months ago by Elder Livermore. We saw a guy named R Tsoisi as well he is a native guy who is very involved with his tribe and is very spiritual but doesn’t like the confines of the church but he loves having us over so we go every so often. We saw a few other investigators and had some quick lessons nothing huge.

Thursday, unfortunately not everyday can be golden and this was not a golden day we saw one investigator her name is K and we are struggling with her to keep her commitments buts its all good we will keep on keeping on.

Friday, OH MY GOSH! So we got this referral for this gentleman named S Lee and it said he wanted to meet us at a place called City Scape which is in the middle of downtown and is where all the big wigs go for lunch and it said he had questions about the organization of our church soooo we thought that was a weird starting point for sure and were a bit hesitant but it went amazing. The guy might as well be LDS already haha. we kept saying things like for example we said that we lived with heavenly father before we came to this earth and he was like finally! someone who believe the same thing i do! hahaha it was awesome and he just already believes it all. He took the restoration pamphlet, a book or Mormon, and the conference ensign and said he would see us the next Friday! so stoked!!!

Saturday, was the day of service for sure! we helped a nonmember lady move into her apartment at 9:30 but they didn’t show till 10:30 haha that one was quick then we went home did our studies for 3 hours and had out lunch so we were out of there at like 3pm we saw like one person and went to dinner and then were told that there was another move at 7pm…. it was brutal hahah it had been 107 degrees that day and so it was still 90’s when we were moving at night. it took about 2ish hours to finish and was tiring but i felt great about it!

Sunday, all the elders except for one bore their testimonies including me. it was great we had 3 investigators there and a ton of less actives and recent converts! Not a lot to report there other then it was an awesome Sabbath!!!

Love you guys,

Elder Call
